  • An American Girl In Miami Can’t Compete With All The Latinas

Posted on October 23rd, 2009 Dan DeLa Cruz 7 comments

Miami Latin WomenI ran into an interesting article over at visavisamag.com titled: “It’s not easy being a white girl in Miami“. It was interesting article about an American woman who doesn’t feel she can compete for the attention of men in Miami because of all of the feminine Latin women who among other things, stay in shape, don’t gain weight, dress to impress, and aren’t afraid to show their feminine curves.

The article didn’t surprise me one bit. And one particular part of the article really struck a cord with me. Lyn Millner, the author of this article writes: “Miami pulses, thrums and throbs with sex. The climate helps, but mainly it’s the café-con-leche goddesses with full lips, unruly hair and inviting eyes. These women would look gorgeous if they made no effort at all. But they dress up even when they go to the dry cleaners – in body hugging T-shirts, low-slung jeans, short skirts and strappy heels. Having a less-than-perfect figure doesn’t stop a Latina. She simply knows what to do. She is never overweight; she is unapologetically curvaceous. OK, so I’m generalizing, but this is what Miami looks like through a white girl’s eyes. There’s a negative way of looking at it. Val says the women in Miami dress like prostitutes.

Everything in that article makes sense, however that last sentence is something that I’ve heard before word for word. Many years ago one of my good Latino friends named Javier was dating an American white girl from Northern New Jersey. They met in college and dated for many years. When they first met, his girlfriend was slim and attractive, but over time, as happens with many American women, she put on a lot of weight. A few years into their relationship my friend Javier who was from Santa Cruz Bolivia decided to take a trip back home. His girlfriend was madly in love with him so she decided to surprise him by going herself to Santa Cruz Bolivia.

What she found when she arrived in Santa Cruz Bolivia was definitely not to her liking. Santa Cruz much like many other foreign cities is a city well known for it’s fierce female competition. Ladies compete amongst themselves by staying in shape, flirting aggressively, and overall being very very feminine and girly. If Miami is the equivalent to a AK-47 then a city like Santa Cruz is an A-bomb.

Javier’s girlfriend had a tough time dealing with all the sexy Latin women who were flirting with her boyfriend. When she came back from Bolivia I asked her how her trip was, and guess what: She said she hated it, and that she’s never going back to Bolivia. And much like many American women’s defensive reactions to foreign women, she stated that “Bolivian women were sluts and that they dressed like prostitutes.”

    Sound familiar?

It seems that now and days American women fall into two groups. One group accepts the fact that foreign women are more feminine, sexy, and attractive in many ways. They look to foreign women as an example of femininity, and try to learn from them. Then you have another group, which is probably the larger of the two, who feels threatened by these foreign ladies. Their only defense mechanism is to attack foreign women with generalizations, insults, and negativity.

I’ll end this blog post with one final excerpt from the article:

“I teach a class once a week at Florida International University in North Miami. The students are mostly women – from Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Puerto Rico, all points Caribbean – and, always, there are one or two male students who look stunned the first day and spend the entire semester sneaking furtive looks at the females.

The only reason I’m able to muster the courage to show up week after week is that I’m invisible to these women. College instructors are expected to bulge in all the wrong places, have no hair or be missing an eyeball – like a child’s favorite doll.

In Miami, men pay attention to exotic women. It’s all about dark. Dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin, dark mystery. White girls can’t compete. If we look like soccer moms, it’s because that’s the best we can do. At a party one time, a hot guy struck up a conversation with me by asking whether I had kids. When I said, “No. Why do you ask?” he told me I looked like the perfect mom. Seeing my reaction and sensing he’d said something wrong, he backpedaled. “I meant that in a good way. A pretty mom.”

      • Although this blog makes a few interesting points, I think it is important not to over-generalize a few opinions. Even from your opening paragraph you apologize for it. Although you are aware of this, it does not justify the generalizations. It is impossible for these articles to speak for ALL AMERICAN WOMEN. And it is ignorant to think these stereotypes don’t also apply to Men. There are many American women who stay in shape and dress sexy and are not intimidated by girls, regardless of their ethnicity. There are many areas of the U.S. that thrive on sex and material pleasures.
I happen to date a man who lives in Honduras and have been there many times (Four trips alone this year and am planning to go again over the holidays). I have never felt a blow to my self-esteem in any way, and in fact, my boyfriend capitalizes on the fact that I am NOT wrapped up in that culture. Even knowing that my boyfriend modeled for Pepe Jeans during his university days does not alter my confidence in any way.
It is not accurate to stereotype ONLY American women as gaining weight once they are in relationships, many women, AND MEN, do this because they become complacent. It is also not to generalize an entire country based on Miami and one friend with apparent low self-esteem. I have seen many overweight, out of style, and most importantly, boring latin women just as I have seen the same in latin men and non latinos male and female. DO NOT limit an entire country of women to TWO groups.
When I visit Honduras I actually feel as though I stand out more and that I divert much attention away from the latin women. My boyfriend also agrees and does not let me out of his site. I don’t have to try hard to be feminine, I don’t force anything and I act like myself completely. I do not bring a pen and paper along with me in order to take notes from the Latin women, I think they can actually learn a thing or two about NY and Chicago Fashion Trends. Many guys see overly girly girls as high maintenance and ridiculous. I am sexy but I don’t have to be over the top, which actually shows LACK of confidence. Hell, if I’m going to the Dry Cleaners, I even look good in an oversized t-shirt, leggings, and boots. I don’t need to show off all my goods, many men enjoy when women leave some things to the imagination.
I wish people would stop the racial and ethnic highlighting and just see people for what they are: PEOPLE. Although different cultures have different ways of life, it is the individual’s personality and lifestyle that becomes the main determinant in behavior.
There are many American women who adore the latin culture and are able to assimilate without hesitation and vice versa. There are many American and Latin women who are PAST the competing with other women stage(Many of them outgrow this in highschool) and they, instead, do things for themself. SO WHAT if an American woman thinks girls dress slutty when they go out to clubs? To each their own. They must have the same opinion about many American women as well. Have you been to clubs in L.A., New York, or Chicago? DO not try and say these clubs aren’t provocative and that these cities do not thrive on sex and material wealth.
Your Two Groups of classifying American women are ignorant and not thought out critically right from the start. Either American women accept themselves as inferior or they accept Latin women as threatening? No other groups? Forget that. I’m not ignorant enough to agree with this overgeneralized, unresearched and solely opinion based regional perspective.

      • I am an American that lived in Miami for almost two years. I think this article is totalllllllly wrong. There are MANY latin men and latin women in Miami. Opposites attract. When the latin men saw my long blonde hair, tall thin figure and all american face they drooled. I went down to model and I got all the attention. The latin women are a dime a dozen. They don’t all look like penelope cruz or selma hyack or whatever her name is. They wear tacky slutty clothing, too much lipsick and have fake boobs. They all look the same. Very few of them have natural beauty. And if they do they ruin it with too much make up and ugly clothes. They are not a classy bunch. As an american I felt sexy and special in Miami. I was a rare commoditiy.

      • It was interesting reading the responses from Anna and Lauren. Their kind of arrogance is precisely why I have been traveling to South America and Asia since high school.

      • I agree with DrKraig Anna and Lauren are the typical american woman that they think they are the coke in the dessert. I’m tired of this kind of woman that is very common here in downtown Chicago. I would not ever in my life look a tall thin figure as Lauren’s I would rather prefer a tall curvy and brunette (and affectionate too) latina woman. Why I would get a ford focus in Chicago while I can import a Ferrari from Colombia?

      • WORD Jimmy– lol I agree

      • Hi, I dont agree with Anna or Lauren at all , But I must say that some American…(SOME !!! )women are very attractive (I dont live in the US but travel there for Business only)and what really kills it is the fact that most White American Women in the USA are very Race -Oriented , and way too Arrogant for my taste(like the Coke in the dessert quota up above) , I´ve traveled to Miami in many ocassions and find the Colombian , Brazilian , Cuban and Argentinean exports classier & prettier than most American females that travel there(with very few exceptions)Very Hard if not impossible to find a full 100%Cowgirl- American gal who calls all the Attention in Miami .

      • I think that everything I have read so far on this site has truth to it, and there are many different sites that talk about dating foreign women vs. American women. I myself haven’t really seriously dated an American woman for years. That is not to say that there are not great qualities about them. I lived in NJ and NY and when I went to Spain for the first time, I was shocked by how many pretty girls there were, later I figured out it’s because there weren’t any fatties. In the U.S. we have so many fat or fluffy girls that could be cute/hot if they weren’t fat. So then the girls that do have good bodies or are in shape, then think that they are the shit and command all this attention or money etc.
I wouldn’t necessarily generalize and say that all the latinas or foreign girls are hotter and more stylish than american girls. There are definitely unattractive and plain latinas. However, I have dated a few girls from different countries, Russia, Czech Republic, and Brazil etc. They are indeed generally more feminine…even one of them that was very athletic was still more feminine. And feminine doesn’t have to mean demanding, bitchy and high-maintenance, which is precisely the qualities the American girls have that drives us to the foreign ones.
I lived in a town in NJ that has lots of Brazilian girls. I was surrounded by the Brazilian community…even became a part of it. And let me tell you, for the most part..these girls don’t leave the house without trying to look their best. This stereotype is true. A lot of the young american girls go out to the mall and places wearing sweats, the Uggs (which are UGly) and messed up hair…it’s true! So is every latina or foreign girl hot and stylish….NO…but is the author correct in his generalization…….PRETTY MUCH!
