The Safest Places On Earth Based On The Global Peace Index
Posted on March 6th, 2010 4 commentsI recently found another good way to judge the safety of a region or country based a new index called The Global Peace Index. This index ranks countries on how peaceful they are with a color rating system. Based on the 2009 GPI index, most of Latin America is about as safe and peaceful as The United States. Based on the GPI the safest and most peaceful countries in all of the Americas are Canada, Costa Rica, Chile and Uruguay.

The methodology for creating the global peace index is as follows: Twenty-three indicators of the existence or absence of peace were chosen by the panel of experts, which are divided into three broad categories: measures of ongoing domestic and international conflict, measures of safety and security in society and measures of militarization.
I think Ecuador should have been upgraded to Blue, but perhaps it was not due to the small conflict they had in 2009 with Colombia. I also think Colombia get’s a red rating because of the FARC presence, which is no longer a threat, unless you venture out into the jungles and mountains, and outside of the large cities.
I have to tend to agree with Venezuela’s red rating because of the deteriorating economic situation and escalating crime in Venezuela. Apart from that Venezuela is heavily militarized, and president Chavez is not afraid to stir up conflicts with Colombia. Also, Venezuela is undergoing and energy, and possibly water crisis, which will most likely increase the chances of political instability in the country.
Europe tops the list for peace and safety as a region. Eastern Europe gradually gets less peaceful and Russia gets a red rating according to the GPI index. South East Asia gets an average rating overall.
Overall I think the peace index is right on the spot. I do feel that things are getting more dangerous in the U.S. because of the economic decline. As unemployment starts to run out within the next year or two, I do feel crime will increase in the U.S as more and more people get desperate. Certain countries like Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Uruguay certainly top the list in terms of cost, safety, weather, and of course women.

No country is safe for men, not even North America, except Western and Northern Europe and Australia and New Zealand, where men are less territorial and possessive over their women. But then again in those progressive, yet feminist countries, women there sexually harass men more often, especially in Scandinavian countries, England, Germany, or France, for example, because they’re more sexually aggressive than men, so guys be prepared to deal with it and don’t retaliate by doing the same thing.

I absolutely think this is ridiculous, coz I leave in Africa, Zimbabwe and it is probably the safest and most friendliest place in the world. New York City is rated second in the world in terms of crime rate next to Soweto South Africa, but I dont see it in red. We actually dont know what a serial killer is here in Zimbabwe, we dont have those, and in the past decade or so we’ve had between 3-5 armed robberies I think 2 were banks and the other 3 were supermarkets and all had South Africans involved with the help of some zimbabweans, we do have theft going on here and there but other than that no sex trade, approximately 1 rape case every 2 to 3 months, prostitution still illegal, a very very strict gun policy, you’ll be hard pressed to find just anyone with a gun here, if you own a business then you have to convince the court why you feel you need a gun, you dont just get it. I do think, however, that the western world has it in for Africa and Asia, so the media portrayal of these 2 continents is mostly false, Somalia is as bad as they say it is though, but other places are really quite peaceful. If you really look into it the experts who did this analysis are American or European, so I think its biased. We do, however, have quite a crappy economy, I think one of the worst in the world, you wud think with that there wud be civil wars and staff but nope…oh and we are rated the most literate African country. Go on look it up…

I live in the US, and though I love it here, I’ve wanted to move to Sweden (or one of the Scandinavian countries, but preferably Sweden) for SO many reason: best education, very liberal & open minded, feminist, nice, beautiful people (or so I’m told) and a large # of atheists, my ideal paradise..the only things that have kept me are that I’ve heard things can run expensive, (of course they also make more $ than we do, and the govt takes care of medical & educational services), and the fact that I’m Latina (Dominican) and don’t know how I’ll be welcomed, also learning the language would be challenging..I’m scared of the change and of doing it on my own, but hopefully it’ll happen as soon as I graduate college.
